Rhode Island – The Ocean State

Rhode Island was never a place I’ve given much though about. I knew it was the smallest state because that is one of those trivia facts you pick up in elementary school, but when we had Ryana pointed toward Rhode Island I had no idea what to expect. Our first view of Rhode Island was Block Island which we came to as we (finally) left Long Island Sound. Block Island was by far the busiest place we’d been to. We tried to get one of their 65 mooring balls, but all of them were full! Luckily the anchorage had good holding so we squeezed ourselves in between a huge catamaran and several other boats. We had a moment of excitement when our starboard engine cut out right as we were attempting to anchor but with Ryan at the helm we did just fine.  Once we got settled Ryan thought it was a little close for comfort, but we sucked it up and kept our fingers crossed. 🙂

Where did all these boats come from?

We holed up here for several days waiting out some bad weather. The skies got very interesting looking.

For the first few days we mostly did chores, but we did walk the mile and a half into town one day to mail a package at the post office. Block Island is apparently a big tourist destination and people were flooding off the ferries when we walked by town.

We also encountered this cruising catamaran and it just goes to prove that it’s not the size of the boat but…

Even staying on the boat though we had plenty of entertainment. One night there was a wedding on shore and to celebrate the joyous event that evening there were fireworks! After the fireworks I got very concerned because a lot of the boats in the harbor were sounding their horns. Ryan calmed me down by telling me that is how boats applaud. Ha!

On our 3rd day on Block Island the weather turned nice so we went for a bike ride around the island. It is a very pretty place! First we went up to the north shore and checked out the beach and lighthouse there.

Our bike ride was about 10 miles and covered a lot of the island. What a nice way to spend the day. What could make it better? How about sushi and a beer after getting cleaned up.

Ryan’s Family Visit Part 2 – Kayaking, Eating and the Hamptons

It took a little convincing but we got everyone into our fleet of water vehicles (2 hard shell kayaks, an inflatable kayak and an inflatable paddle board) for a trip back to the lagoon. With our motley crew set up we began our journey. It was another really hot day so it felt nice to be close to the water and feel the breeze.

It turns out the beach was great for shell collecting and everyone came away with a great haul. There were really pretty spiral looking shells and McKenna found a rock that looked exactly like a potato!

One of the days we were wandering around we went and looked at the fancy boats and then happened upon a movie night! There were also concerts in the park to enjoy on these warm summer nights.

Taking a break from our routine of swimming we went on a drive to the Hamptons. I’m not sure what all the fuss is about. Maybe as tourists we didn’t have access to the best parts, but what we found was $30 sandwiches and beaches that you couldn’t use unless you had applied for a beach permit months ago. There were lots and lots of fancy cars driving around though so Ryan got to drool over some of those. We walked around, looked at the fancy shops and in Sag Harbor looked at more fancy boats.

Ryan’s Family Visit Part 1 – Swimming, Sailing and lots of frozen yogurt

Ryan’s family (Mom – Cindy, Stepdad – Chuck and Niece – McKenna) came out to visit us for 9 nine days in July. We were in Port Jefferson, NY when they arrived and decided to stay there for their entire visit due to the fun town with lots of restaurants, warm water for swimming and the availability of frozen yogurt. The amount of frozen yogurt consumed by 5 people over 9 nine was amazing, but this is vacation right?? 🙂

Right away when they arrived McKenna began what would be a common refrain….”Who wants to swim with me?!?” Since water was so nice we couldn’t resist! We also got out all the water toys to play with as well. There was also a lot of jumping and diving from the boat. Chuck is a good diver and was able to give some pointers to Ryan and McKenna who after some belly flops started to get the hang of it. Of course just jumping off was fun as well.

Since we wanted to show them what the boat could do we tied up our dingy to reserve our mooring ball and went for a day sail. With no destination in mind we followed the winds and had a relaxing day sailing on the Long Island Sound.

The whole time they were there it was unseasonably hot so a lot of our time was spent trying to stay cool. Swimming helped a lot and so did the occasional rain shower. McKenna and Chuck had a great time dancing around in the rain!

It was fun to have Mckenna on the boat, she sure has a lot of energy and was a swimming machine! She is only 11 years old, but you can see the teenager already starting to emerge.

Port Jeff was a nice place to go to dinner in the evenings. The main drag was a short walk from the dingy dock and had many tasty places to go.

Our first visitor

Our friend Greg came out for a quick visit over the weekend of July 5th. The first visitor we’ve had to the boat since moving aboard in April! Very exciting! We spent the morning of the 5th making sure the boat was in ship shape and praying nothing would break.  We wanted to greet Greg sitting on our back deck dressed in our fancy clothes drinking wine and pretend that’s what we did all day! By the way, in case you were wondering….It’s not! We had spent the previous few days completing boat chores (Ryan got the water maker working….WOOHOOO), scrubbing the hulls, doing laundry and grocery shopping. The last 2 may sound like simple tasks but when the laundromat is a half mile away and you have no car to carry back groceries its harder than you think. And the water maker was probably a 100 hour chore that Ryan had been working on for months!

Well anyway, Greg arrived in the late afternoon to where we were staying at Port Washington in Long Island. We hadn’t explored the town that much or eaten out (due to all those chores) so we welcomed the chance to go out when Greg arrived. We checked out the tiki bar at one marina, had dinner and then went to Louies for an after dinner drink. Port Washington is a nice town, not a whole lot going on but it’s cute.

Out on the town.

The next morning we got up and set off on an all day sail to Port Jefferson. It was one of the first days we sailed the whole way to where we going and was a nice change of pace. Usually we were trying to outrun thunder storms or get to a location early to get a good spot. But, on the way to Port Jeff we had a reserved mooring ball and clear weather so it didn’t matter how long it took! We had a nice relaxing day and even sailed down the channel into Port Jeff just because we could!

Port Jeff is a nice protected harbor and the water looked clear so we decided go swimming! Well, Greg jumped in the water and then Ryan and I came in too. We haven’t been swimming at all yet because the water has been so murky but here I could actually see my toes, so in we went! And the fact that it was a billion degrees outside was also pretty convincing!

After some cooling off in the water we went out to explore Port Jeff which is a pretty awesome town! We arrived on a Saturday and the there were tons of people around. We had an amazing dinner at a Spanish restaurant and then wandered back to the boat.

The next day we did a tour of the harbor by dingy and found a small lagoon. There were some bluffs there that you could climb and come out looking at Long Island sound. It was really pretty and Greg even said it was Caribbean-esque. 🙂

4th of July

We headed back into Manhattan on July 4th to watch the fireworks show. There were tons of people out on the streets but we were able to find a pretty good spot with a little breathing room to watch the show. It was pretty spectacular! And some of the surrounding buildings were lit up as well.

Manhattan Tourists

Having not spent much time in New York (like only a 14 hour layover) I was happy to be able to play tourist! After an hour bus/subway trip from where we docked on City Island we arrived downtown in Grand Central Station and set out to explore. We probably walked 5 miles all over the city, visiting Central Park, gawking at the tall buildings, walking down Broadway, dodging people in Times Square and making our way to several of the different neighborhoods. We both really liked it, but Ryan’s not so much for big city life and felt a little claustrophobic. I did notice that no one was wearing sunglasses, but then you don’t really need to when the tall buildings block all the sun!

Sailing through New York Harbor and the East River

We had an exciting day sailing through New York Harbor and the East River. We had great views as we went right past the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Manhattan city front. It was was also exciting due to all the boat traffic we were dodging and the crazy currents.

Things got a bit excited as we continued down the east river. Not only was there other boat traffic to dodge but as we neared Hell’s Gate the currents really picked up. At one point our boat was going 13.9 knots, a boost of about 5 knots. This is the fastest we’ve ever got the boat going! And then, as we approach one turn we see a 15 ft whirlpool in front of us. Really?? A whirlpool??? Yikes. We got into the edge of that and it swung the boat around pretty good but then we kept going. Wow. I wish I had gotten a better picture but was too terrified to get out the camera until after we were well past!

Atlantic City!

Atlantic City had been a place I was excited about before even leaving on our trip. The Boardwalk sounded really interesting with the beach right there and the casinos, so when we saw the coastline approaching I was getting real excited!

AC!

AC!

That night we got dressed up and headed out to the Boardwalk. It was Friday night so we thought it would be crazy! Our first hint that all might not be as we thought came in the cab when we asked our cab driver what he liked about Atlantic City and he replied “Absolutely nothing.”. Hmmm….. well that’s just one person’s opinion, we would see for ourselves. When we got to the Boardwalk it was like a ghost town. My Mom told me that it had just reopened after Hurricane Sandy this May so maybe it hadn’t quite got back into its stride. We found somewhere to eat, played casino games for half an hour and then were back to the boat by 10pm. Not exactly the night I had imagined!

Dressed up for a night out!

Dressed up for a night out!

Well, Ryan didn’t exactly have the weekend he imagined either! We noticed on the way to AC that our starboard engine wasn’t always engaging correctly.   Ryan did some research and found out that he’d have to do some maintenance on the transmission. He spent the next three days contorted down in the engine compartment pulling the upper unit out of the transmission to lap the clutch cones. . . ask him further if you want the fun details!

Ryan could be a contortionist!

After Ryan successfully completed the maintenance (it’s awesome that he’s so handy) we decided to try one more night out. We went to the Golden Nugget which was just across from where we were staying and separate from the Boardwalk. Here is where we found everybody! We had a fun night there playing pai gow poker and talking to the natives. James Gandolfini was the talk of the night with everyone reminiscing about him. He was very active in the communities in New Jersey.

Leaving the Chesapeake, then Delaware and New Jersey

After a month and a half in the Chesapeake we finally left for greener pastures. We made our transit out through the north end of the Chesapeake via the Chesapeake / Delaware (C&D) Canal. Our first canal….I wonder if this is what the Panama one will be like. :):) It was actually a very small waterway with houses lining both sides and a lot of bridges to go under. Even though I know that the bridges are 140 ft and we’re only 75 ft it still makes me nervous every time we go under one.

Stanley and I as we head down the C&D

Stanley and I as we head down the C&D

We made it to Delaware around 3pm and docked at a marina along the old C&D canal which seemed to us like nothing more than a glorified irrigation ditch! Being in a new state we were eager to check out Delaware City so we leashed up Stanley and went to visit the town. There was not much going on and the town was quiet but we got some appetizers at Crabby Dicks. While there we were trying to think of what Delaware is known for and could not think of a thing… Our waitress at the restaurant asked where we were from and when we said San Francisco she looked at us in amazement and asked “Why would you come here?!?!”. LOL. I thought it was not so bad. A fine stop for one night.

We wanted to get an early start the next morning to take advantage of favorable currents in Delaware Bay as we made our way to New Jersey!! (I couldn’t wait to get to New Jersey to see all the awesome hair poofs that I’m sure every resident there wears 🙂 An early start meant 4am so we left our irrigation ditch in darkness.

Yes, we left at 4am!

Yes, we left at 4am!

Leaving before sunrise meant we got to see sun rise over the Delaware Bay. We loved the way that the colors really lit up the nuclear power plant. As Ryan would say…..Glorious.  🙂

Beautiful sunrise...

Beautiful sunrise?

We did well with our timing and had a very smooth ride through the Bay arriving in Cape May, New Jersey around 4pm. The anchorage was not really close to anything so we took Stanley ashore and went back to the boat. We saw some folks (Jim and Judy) we’d met in Delaware City pull in so we went over to have a drink and a chat with them. After a couple fun hours of shooting the breeze we headed back home again for dinner. Once home we discovered that our water tanks which we had filled in Delaware City were empty! Uh oh! We finally realized that it was because someone (Stanley?) left the deck hose on and drained the entire 120 gallons of water over the day. Yikes. Luckily we had 15 gallons in jugs on the deck and were headed to a marina the next day.

We breezed through the rest of New Jersey, stopping for a few days in Atlantic City (more on that later), then heading to Mannasquan and finally Sandy Hook.

Mannasquan seemed to be a nice place. We were there only one evening and left early the next day but the town seemed cute and there was a nice beach with some cool restaurants.  We also saw a pretty amazing sunset.

Chilling at sunset.

Chilling at sunset.

We had seen some of the effects of Hurricane Sandy in Atlantic City, but it was really obvious in Sandy Hook. We anchored outside one of the marinas that had been completely destroyed and was in the process of being rebuilt. A lot of the boats in the yard also looked like they had sustained a lot of damage, and they were the lucky ones who didn’t sink outright.

A week after leaving the Chesapeake, we are ready to keep moving and make our way up to New York.

ATTN: Nancy, Dave and X

On and off for about 8 years I ran with a group at work. Many people came and went through the group but there were 3 people who were constant. Nancy, the dictator of the group, who forced (sometimes literally) everybody out on the trail every Tuesday and Thursday. X, Mr. I’m Ok with any decision, unless that decision is running to Alcosta! And Dave, well there are no words…..  🙂

Before I left they were giving me a hard time about keeping up with running. Nancy thought I should get a treadmill for the boat and Dave and X thought I should run circles around the boat each day! I know for a fact that they didn’t believe I would ever run again!

This is X’s commentary when I told him I would keep up running:

This is what I think what will happen:

June 1st, Sunny, two days on the boat, it is boring, I need to drink some beer.

June 2nd, Sunny, I think I need more sleep.

June 3rd, Raining, Not sure what I am going to do, there is no TV on the boat. Beer sounds a good idea.

June 4th, Sunny, Virginia, here I come, time to go to Costco for Pizza and Beer.

June 5th, Raining, Nothing else to do, I think I will buy a satellite tv

June 6th, Amazon is amazing, I receive my Satellite today

June 7th,  I have Oprah on my TV, finally I can watch her in the afternoon, more beer.

.

Dec, 10th, I will definitely add running in my new year resolution.

Well, it’s taken two months to get here but today on June 23rd I ran for the first time. And no….we don’t watch Oprah. 😛

And since nothing actually happened unless there is proof here is a picture of Stanley and I setting out for our run!

Stanley and I setting out on our run.
